Upstream Performance
The cellexis system can be provided in different scales. The smallest system (NW 16/2) comprises an effective bioreactor volume of 17ml and an effective surface area of 2345 cm2, substituting e.g. more than two and a half (2,5) roller bottles or thirteen (13) T-175 cultivation flasks.
The largest system (NW 60) comprises an effective bioreactor volume of 440 ml and an effective surface area of 115.804 cm2, substituting e.g. more than one hundred thirty six (136) roller bottles or six hundred sixty one (661) T-175 cultivation flasks. cellexis one allows continuous cultivation and expansion in one single bioreactor without passaging.
The basis for aforesaid feature is the design of the porous borosilicate glass mold with a narrow pore size distribution (160 µm and 250 µm) and the inoculation channel, so that the wetted surface area will be controlled by the inoculation volume and the cell density of the wetted surface by the cell concentration of the cell suspension at inoculation.
In this way, a continuous expansion of the cell culture is guaranteed without the need for passaging at confluence and spreading of cell culture onto multiple cultivation vessels. The elimination of passaging results in a total reduction of the culture’s lag phase by approx. 30%.
Savings in material consumption and labor results in further cost savings by up to 70% of operational manufacturing costs. The efficiency-oriented design allows savings through miniaturization of the production system that would reduce footprint by up to 90% and according investment costs for manufacturing infrastructure.
